Behind the Numbers: How Your Donations Change Lives

A financial report is a story. This is our last 8 months in action.

From January to August, numbers tell a story — the parties that turned into kibble, the midday transports, the surgeries, the learning trips, and the slow work of turning a half-built space into a proper home for dogs.

A construction stalled: The bulk of construction investments took place from March to May. However, we had to stop the construction because we run out of funds. This was expected. Moving into the new (unfinished) shelter was a matter of urgency. We were being kicked out of our old place.

Why is it in red? Are you running the shelter on loss? Yes, to be exact, a cumulative loss of IDR 142 million (~ EUR 7300). Facing pressing needs, we have not yet managed to balance income and expenses. In short, your current donations cover gaps from previous weeks, and when it is not enough, a few of us including the founder, pay out of our own pockets to cover deficits.

What your support means next: We need to complete the new shelter properly: a clinic, integrated rehab/handicap spaces, and better boarding/house facilities for staff. The remaining budget is about IDR 750 million ( ~ EUR 38.000). Every bit we build reduces monthly overhead and puts more of your future donations straight into care.

Moving house without losing anyone: You’ll notice Transport costs swell in April–May. That’s not random — it’s the cost of moving an entire shelter. We shifted about 70 dogs from our old site in Mawun over a couple of weeks. The biggest expenses however concerned the flight tickets of Ginger, Spain, and Tiger - three lucky dogs that got adopted! These costs were recuperated from the adopters as donations.

A party that paid for kibble: In May we threw a fundraiser party at Josie’s Sunset Corner. It wasn’t “free to do good”: the venue, alcohol, and music cost IDR 48.6 million ( ~ EUR 2.500). But the night delivered about IDR 80 million in consumption, donations and tickets, so we netted roughly IDR 31.4 million to for Lomdogs. That’s what a good party looks like to us: a line of bowls filled the next morning.

Other events we organised are: a September pool party with about IDR 22.5 million income against about IDR 10 million costs, ( ~ EUR 1150 / EUR500) (to be seen in the next report!), and two Food Market events in July and August where local restaurants donate dishes and guests get access to an all-you-can-eat buffet paying a ticket and donations to Lomdogs.

Feeding the pack, every single day: Our heaviest expense is the quietest: feeding roughly 80 dogs in the shelter and clinic/rehab, and street feeding. From January through August, Animal Meals & Drinks reached IDR 166 million. Some months look lighter because supplies were bought in bulk the month before; March was a double-stock month, which brought the next month’s cost down.

We took action and fed the abandoned dogs following the eviction of local businesses at Tanjung Aan Beach.

We spent IDR 51.3 million year-to-date for Animal Injections & Medication, plus Animal Medicine Supplies. They jump around when we need to restock or handle clusters of rescues. And then there are the emergencies.

Training to do better work: In July, you’ll see a one-off Project Thailand expense of IDR 57.3 million (~ EUR 3.000). That was our contribution to a training partnership with WVS Thailand — an animal welfare organization that equips vets and teams to deliver higher-quality care and sterilizations. We co-financed the program with WVS (you can see 47,3 million ( ~ EUR 2400) were returned to us in the income section of the report).

People, always: Behind every line item are persons lifting, cleaning, feeding, medicating, comforting. Salaries & Wages run about IDR 55 million (~ EUR 4900) per month. The founder and the rest of us do not receive any wages. To the contrary, as the report shows, we often have to cover deficits from our own pockets.

The cost of fundraising (and why it’s worth it): Events have costs like printing, ticketing, lights. Fundraising Costs total IDR 25,7 million through August, and, except once last year, we manage to pair every rupiah spent with many more raised (see Josie’s above). Merchandise has also been a steady stream: IDR 269 million ( ~ EUR 13.800) in revenue so far this year.

One important note on the charts you’ll see: donations show up when we withdraw them, not when supporters make the pledge on GoFundMe. That’s why some months look quiet and others surge.

Consolidating to save: We currently rent a Rehab House (year-to-date IDR 28 million (~ EUR 1430) in rent) and previously used a Disability House as we grew and stabilized operations. These two have now been merged and the plan now is to move them into the new shelter and stop paying rents to third parties. It’s better for the dogs (closer to our medical team) and better for the monthly burn.
